Managing Rules

Rules are defined principles which affect how the application reacts to certain conditions. A rule consists of a triggering condition and an action which is to be performed when the triggering condition is met

There are six types of rules:

  • View
  • Validation
  • Calculation
  • Action GUI
  • Action Object
  • Starts an Action

For details, please see the Rule Types chapter.

Rules perform the following functions:

  • Modification of attribute values of business object instances based on defined conditions or events.
  • Automatic values modifications.
  • A starting point for more complex objects modifications via workflows.

A rule always consists of the following parts: body and condition. The 'Body' represents what action is to be taken while 'condition' specifies that something must be valid for the action to be activated. Examples of the actions include: disable / enable a field, start a Workflow, carry out a calculation, validate fields etc.

Some rules (rules of type 'View' and 'Starts an Action') are active only when assigned to a view. This assignment is done in the View Customizer.
