Single-byte Character Sets

In these character sets one character always takes one byte. Only the characters of the code page can be used and can not be intermixed with characters from other code pages. For example, West European special characters can not be intermixed with Arabic characters.

Examples:

  • Windows 1252 (Western Europe)

    Help Image

  • Windows 1256 (Arabic)

    Help Image

In the example, number e4 is interpreted differently by 'Western Europe' and 'Arabic' code pages.
